For Teachers

Run this with points toward a class goal, stickers, or a privilege like picking Friday's read-aloud or first dibs at recess equipment as the reward. The grid works exactly the same either way. Only what a winning square earns changes.

The digit draw doubles as a math lesson

Once every square has a name in it, pull two students up to draw the away team's numbers and two more for the home team. Ten slips of paper, one digit on each, no repeats. Read every number out loud as it comes out of the cup so the whole room sees it happen live. That's random assignment in action, with no way for anyone to angle for a better square, which is exactly why the numbers get drawn only after every square is already claimed, never before.

A two-minute probability talk

Football scores don't land on every digit equally. Touchdowns, extra points, and field goals push 0, 3, and 7 to the top of the last-digit list more often than digits like 2 or 5. Ask the class to guess which squares look strongest before the numbers are drawn, then check who called it right once the game gets underway. Our football squares page and strategy guide cover the full digit breakdown if you want more detail before class.
